Lessons from ExpensiCon

Lessons from ExpensiCon

It's been a little over a month since ExpensiCon 3. I can still see the sunlight beautifully setting on the white-washed Puglian walls of Borgo Egnazia. While memories of the beauty and relationships made there will last me a lifetime, the lessons learned can serve us all immediately.

Expense reports: The necessary evil of the working world

Expense reports: The necessary evil of the working world

Ah, expense reports—a dreaded but unavoidable aspect of corporate life, or any life, really. No one really savours the task (nobody in their right mind anyway), but it seems there have always been two types of employees: those who meticulously calculate every penny after every work trip and submit their reports on time every month, and those who put it off until they receive passive-aggressive threats from Brian in accounting.

Scaling SQLite to 4M QPS on a single server (EC2 vs Bare Metal)

The simplest SQLite common table expression tutorial

The simplest SQLite common table expression tutorial

I've been trying to wrap my head around Common Table Expressions for a while, and all the tutorials I've read started out with "simple" examples that were way too advanced for me to follow. Here's my attempt to write a tutorial that starts as simple as possible.

CEO Friday: Why we don’t hire .NET programmers

CEO Friday: Why we don’t hire .NET programmers

As you might know, we're hiring the best programmers in the world.  Sure, everyone says that.  But my coders will beat up your coders, any day of the week.  For example, Mich is barely 5 foot tall, but is a competitive fencer.  Witold is a 6'3" former professional hockey player.  Nate practices knife fighting for fun.  And they're pretty decent programmers, too.
