Expensify vs Divvy: see how they compare

If dealing with your business's backend tends to give you (and your employees) a headache, it might be time to switch to expense management software.

With customizable workflows, automatic importing, SmartScan capabilities for receipt capture, and more, Expensify has the tools you need to get the job done. But we aren’t the only platform out there offering management automation.

To see how we compare to — and outperform — our competitors, check out our guide to Expensify vs. Divvy below.

Similarities and differences: Divvy vs. Expensify

As a Divvy alternative, Expensify has a lot in common with Divvy when it comes to the services and integrations offered. However, there are a few key differentiating factors to be aware of before making any decisions.

Similarities

The similarities between Divvy and Expensify include:

  • Android and iOS app options

  • Expense and mileage tracking

  • Free corporate cards

  • Mobile receipt upload and management

  • Features for all types of customers — from freelancers to large enterprises

  • Spend control

  • Workflow management options

Differences

Expensify and Divvy differ in the following ways:

  • Divvy requires you to use their corporate card.

  • Divvy does not provide third-party connections to other credit card providers.

  • Divvy does not offer travel services, while Expensify does through Expensify Travel.

  • Divvy charges foreign transaction fees, while Expensify does not.

  • Divy requires that any out-of-pocket and reimbursable expenses are entered manually. Expensify will automatically input that info for you with SmartScan.

  • Divvy charges high fees for late payments.

  • Expense coding cannot be edited in bulk in Divvy.

  • Expensify sends reminder emails to approve expenses, and Divvy does not.

  • Expensify has several dozen more integration options than Divvy.

  • Expensify lets you create expense rules.

  • Expensify includes per diem support, which can be especially helpful for businesses with lots of employee travel.

  • Expensify offers the same experience on mobile and the web, no matter if you're an admin or an employee.

  • Expensify provides GPS mileage tracking, while Divvy only provides manual mileage tracking.

  • Expensify offers next-day reimbursement, a feature that pays the employee back the next business day.

  • Expensify integrates with travel platforms like Uber and Lyft and automatically captures expenses from these services.

Pricing breakdown

Both Expensify and Divvy offer free trials and free limited plans for their services. If you want to upgrade your plan, you’ll pay $5 to $18 a month per user for Expensify. However, you can get that cost down significantly when you sign up and use the free Expensify credit card and commit to an annual plan.

Divvy plans are free for now, though they offer limited functionality in comparison to Expensify. In addition, it’s important to keep in mind that Divvy charges both foreign transaction fees and high late payment fees, which can add up over time. But with Expensify, the price you see is the price you pay — no gimmicks or hidden charges.
